DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE!
When asked the date of the large thatched house in which he lives in with his family, Dr Tim Bunker answers: “about fifteen something”, with a grin on his face.
He is referring to the fact that the builders started work at three o’clock in the afternoon. However, the disguise is so good that not everybody gets the joke. The house – it has a 70ft ridge and cavity walls almost as thick as the traditional Devon cob it is meant to emulate – wad completed four years ago, and was runner-up for The Daily Telegraph Individual Homes Award.
It was a labour to which the Bunkers had looked forward for many years. Tim, an orthopaedic specialist, and his wife, Sue, had moved house nine times in 17 years. When he gained his consultant’s post in Exeter they decided to put down their roots.
The Bunkers wanted a traditional “chocolate box” Devon cottage. They both love thatch and they wanted to be in a village as near to the Exe estuary as possible, as Tim, a sailor, loves to be near water and the sea was too far away as he is required to live within 10 miles of the hospital where he works.
